Detailed Introduction

Mica is a natural mineral composed of different proportions of potassium, aluminum, iron, water and magnesium. Mica is naturally occurring and is collected based on silicate minerals. It is formed into a thin plate or sheet structure, with different mineral compositions and common characteristics. Mica can maintain its elasticity and toughness even at high temperatures, which is why mica is most suitable for use in extreme humidity and temperature conditions. The mineral mica has an absorption range of 2% to 5%. Its refractive index is average, and the visible spectrum is 1.6.

Mica application

Mica is used in a variety of products ranging from drywalls, paints, fillers, roofing and shingles, electronics etc. Also used in blush, lip products and eye products. Other applications include nail polish, body powder, paint, glass, clay, resin and more. In some cases, even if mica powder is applied to oil, clear cream or acrylic, etc., the collection will appear darker.

The leading use of dry-ground mica is in the joint compound for filling and finishing seams and blemishes in gypsum wallboard (drywall). The mica acts as a filler and extender, provides a smooth consistency, improves the workability of the compound, and provides resistance to cracking.

In paint industry, ground mica is used as a pigment extender that also facilitates suspension, reduces chalking, prevents shrinking and shearing of the paint film, increases the resistance of the paint film to water penetration and weathering and brightens the tone of colored pigments. Mica also promotes paint adhesion in aqueous and oleoresinous formulations.

In the well-drilling industry, as an additive to drilling fluids. The coarsely ground mica flakes help prevent the loss of circulation by sealing porous sections of the drill hole. Well drilling muds accounted for 15% of dry-ground mica use.

The plastics industry, used dry-ground mica as an extender and filler, especially in parts for automobiles as lightweight insulation to suppress sound and vibration.

As a rubber additive, mica reduces gas permeation and improves resiliency.
